BUILT TO LAST - PART 1

The Thursday Word & Fire service opens with a long worship set ("You reign forever… you are the wisdom before time began", "Yahweh, Lord of hosts, King of glory", "Hallelujah - that's what my song will be", "My worship is my weapon"). Pastor Jerry frames it from the start: "This is not just another midweek service. This is an encounter service." He leads the congregation to pray "My encounter is for a lifetime. My encounter will not expire."

He then announces the theme - Built to Last - and immediately ties it to foundations: "The longevity of every building is connected to the foundation on which it is built." The fire-prayer block goes after wrong foundations laid in the father's house, in marriage, in career and in the family line; against negative patterns that repeat; and against every power saying the worshipper will not last in the ember months - "September, I will last. October, I will last. November, I will last. December, I will last." He prays Psalm 119:89 with the house - "Forever, O Lord, thy word is settled" - and declares over people who suffered setbacks from January to August that they are bouncing back bigger and better.

The prophetic announcement section is a litany: "You are built to last. Your fire will not go off. Your journey is unhijackable. A generational dynasty is coming from you. Your candle will not go off in the middle." He has the congregation walk up to 14 people and scream in their ear, "I am built to last."

The teaching then turns to the sub-theme "This one will not last," read out of Genesis 11:1-9 - the tower of Babel, with Nimrod (whose name he glosses as "one who rebels against God") at the centre. He warns anyone carrying greatness: "May your greatness not bring rebellion." From the text he draws the marks of what does not last: (1) building from earth to heaven instead of from heaven to earth - "as kingdom citizens we don't build from earth to heaven, we build from heaven to earth"; (2) an inconsistent language - faith today, fear tomorrow, which he compares to bulldozing a building back to foundation level every time you reach lintel level; (3) a circle that doesn't speak your language - "if you are not speaking my language, I will not give you access to my spirit… block them"; (4) noise - Babel, he says, means noise, and "you will not build in noise… turn down the noise so that you can hear me clearly"; and (5) an agenda of making a name for yourself - "once God is stepping out and it's all about you, it will not last."

He also grounds the confidence in Christ as builder: Jesus said "upon this rock I will build my church, and the gates of hell shall not prevail," so "they didn't build you - they can't break you," and "I am God's project." Using the parable of the two houses he is careful to say believers are not insulated from trials: both houses met the same wind, flood and rain - "the flood that carried them will not carry you."

He closes with the offering as a wave offering, the announcements, and a decree over the house from Psalm 91: "I am dwelling in the secret place of the most High." Part 1 is explicitly an introduction; the series will go on to cover you built to last, what God has put in your hands built to last, and the contenders against what you build.

1. Longevity is a foundation question. "The longevity of every building is connected to the foundation on which it is built." Where celebration doesn't last and negative patterns repeat, something is wrong with the foundation - and there is only one foundation that holds: Jesus Christ (1 Cor 3:11).
2. You are God's project, not man's. Jesus said "I will build my church and the gates of hell shall not prevail." Because man did not build you, man cannot break you - and God will not build something and then let the devil take the glory over it. As with Peter, when a builder of God drifts, God finds him where he is and returns him to his assignment.
3. You are not insulated from trials - you are built to survive them. Both houses in the parable met the same wind, flood and rain. The difference wasn't the storm; it was the foundation. "The flood that carried them will not carry you; the wind that took their roof off will not take yours."
4. Kingdom builders build from heaven to earth, not earth to heaven. Babel's builders had energy but the wrong format. Building from earth means building with human strength, myopic ideas and only what you can see; building from eternity means calling forth the things that be not, and being shown what will stop you before it arrives. "If you are building from earth to heaven, he that is in heaven stops you; if you build from heaven to earth, he that is on earth cannot stop you."
5. Smartness, beauty and certificates are not foundations. "The battle is not to the strong, the race is not to the swift." The storm doesn't ask whether you are a fine girl or a rich man. Praying, fasting three days and breaking out in tongues before an interview or a proposal are not eccentricity - that is how we build in this kingdom.
6. In this kingdom we build with words, so your language must be consistent. Faith in the morning and fear at night is a bulldozer taken to your own building: you reach lintel level, speak against it, and knock it back to the foundation, over and over - which is why there's no progress. Declaration must be conviction (Sarah judged him faithful), not spontaneity; "the devil is not afraid of spontaneous believers whose declarations have no longevity."
7. Guard your circle - the people around you must speak the same language. At Babel everyone spoke one language. If people around you speak fear, magnify the devil and carry "arrows of the devil in their mouth," block them from your spirit - even brothers, sisters, husbands, wives. "You were not there when I was praying; you don't pray the way I pray, so I will not allow you access into my spirit."
8. Notice how God stopped Babel: he left their strength and changed their language. The battle is not about who is stronger. You may not even understand what is inside of you; the problem is that your language has changed, and it is affecting the potency of your destiny.
9. Babel means noise - and you cannot build in noise. Noise of competition, anxiety, worry, lack of direction. Direction for a new season, and the knowledge of your kairos, cannot be received in noise. "Turn down the noise so that you can hear me clearly."
10. A building raised to make a name for yourself will not last. God is raising people he can put his signature on - those who say "Lord, feel free to tattoo your signature everywhere." "Once God is stepping out and it's all about you, it will not last." Their energy was right; their agenda was wrong.
11. Greatness must not turn into rebellion. Nimrod was among the first men Scripture called great, and his name means one who rebels against God. "May it never be said that the greatness that God brought your way became a platform for rebellion."
12. Build what God assigned you, not what impresses people. Some build for legacy, some for show, some for transgenerational greatness - and some build exactly what God's blueprint says, even if others wouldn't call it great. "You are not in competition with anybody."
13. What is afflicting you is not permanent. The light affliction is for a moment; sorrow endures for a night. Pain, shame, disease, barrenness, stagnation, limitation and the delay of marital settlement "shall not last" - but you were built to last.

Today / this season

• Pray the fire prayers against every wrong foundation laid in your father's house, family, marriage, career and office - and declare Jesus as the foundation of your life, family and career.
• Declare over the ember months: "September, I will last. October, I will last. November, I will last. December, I will last."
• Declare Psalm 119:89 with both hands raised: "Forever, O Lord, thy word over my life is settled."
• If you suffered setbacks from January to August, raise the fire of your prayer - "you are bouncing back bigger and better."
• Walk up to 14 people and scream in their ear, "I am built to last" (repeated at the close as "You will last").
• Tell your neighbour: "You are built to last," "I am God's project," "How are you building?", "Watch how you're building," "Watch your circle," "My language is the same," "Block them off."
• Audit your building: look at what you have built, are building or want to build, and ask yourself how you built it - from earth up, or from heaven down.
• Keep your language consistent - stop speaking against what you just built; pray for a guard over your tongue.
• Block from your spirit anyone who does not speak the language of your future; tune off when they start talking.
• Turn down the noise so you can hear God's direction for your new season.
• Bring offering, tithe and partnership as a wave offering.
• Do your 10-minute dance before you go to bed tonight.
• Speak in the Holy Ghost; put your two hands on the proposal before you step down from your car.
• Close with the Psalm 91 decree: "I am dwelling in the secret place of the most High… he is my refuge and my fortress; in him will I trust."
